Make those important few extra dollars #4

Make Those Important Few Extra Dollars

Hi again, Now I am in about six weeks from the start of these blogs showing you how to make those few extra dollars.  If you are really interested in making those few extra dollars, you must have done a lot of work.

Hopefully by now you have at least got yourself a mind blowing domain name and a great WordPress  site set up and running.  You should, maybe, even be still at that level, learning how to use WordPress and have the basic Pages you should have.  That is a static “Home Page”.  Then an “About Me” page, a “Privacy” page and a “Contacts” page.  There can be others but we can deal with them later.  What is hard for me at this time is to remember what I have said before but, we’ll get through that.

Are You at the point of still trying to learn WordPress?

If so, good on you, providing that you are really learning and not spinning your wheels.  Remember that if you simply Google any of the steps I have said will help you make those few extra dollars.  You will get tons of information in any section.  It’s a thin line here between getting information from those shiny objects and suffering from Information overload on stuff that is far too ahead of where you are at the moment and please, do not part with any money unless you have to.  Apart from two sections that I have recommended.  12 Second Commute and Directory of Ezines.  The money you should have spent should only be a few dollars.  Hopefully less than $20.00.  The money you would have had to pay for 12 Second Commute and Directory of Ezines will repay you in spades as to get further along and see WHY you need them.  They are both extremely important.  Once you have REALLY got a hold on 12 Second Commute and at least looked at Directory of Ezines. Everything else is easy and you can either through money away or keep following me.

Where I am at the moment in my search for those few extra dollars?

Let’s get this straight from this point.  You need a list to help you get ahead.  The list or lists should each be for a specific niche.  You already have two products to sell as an affiliate for 12 Second Commute and Directory of Ezines in the Making Money section.  At this time I am going to suggest that you don’t spend any money on Directory of Ezines apart from the initial payment to join.  You have to learn how to get banners and other advertising material from your affiliate companies.

Each list should be of people that are interested in what you have to sell.  It’s no good offering your, “Making Money” group. That you got from advertising the two affiliate businesses that you have. Products that you may subsequently get later, say Golf Equipment.   The Making Money group is only interested in Making Money.   Maybe, much later, when you are really accepted and trusted by that group, you may take a chance and offer them products that Making Money people MAY be interested in.  Just keep on tarck with what I am saying and you will be making those few extra dollars and when you are getting that on a regular basis, can start working out how to go further and you won’t need me.

I have digressed!!

At the moment I am in a bit of a lull.  I put an advert into an ezine within Directory of Ezines called “Straight Talker’s Forum”.  It cost $97.00 USD and was a solo advert taken directly from the Affiliates Section of 12 Second Commute.  I wanted to use a banner but was told it wouldn’t be seen for several months but with a solo ad, only three went into the magazine at any one time.  And, it would go in within two weeks.

Well, it went in and I got three responses within the following week.  None of whom replied to my personal welcome email.  Hopefully they do upgrade in 12 Second Commute and I make some commission BUT, that was $33.00 USD per list member and I feel a little ripped off but, did I choose the right Ezine or the right ad?

I have also connected with some “Safelists”.   Google it for the information but resist the pull of parting with money.  It will be tough. Three in total but only advertising in two at the moment.   Affiliate Funnel has my interest at the moment but I need more information.  In fact while trying to get information I could pass onto you, I got caught up with some Shiny Objects and finished up downloading ebooks of about 100 pages plus several others.  Not much money spent but now in Information Overload because none of them were really appropriate until some time in the distant future.

Sending out Advertisements

So, just sending out adverts, banners mainly at the moment, on the safe lists to see if I get ANY reaction at all.  Nothing so far but Safelist are either free or very cheap.  And, as we are still learning, it’s a good place to start learning how to get a banner or Solo Advert etc from your  Affiliate page and placing it on the Safe List.  I made several mistakes at first and wasted a number of credits.  Credits that you earn by looking at other Safelist adverts.  But, I did learn and now have a number of ads floating around the web.  BTW. please get a gmail address and use it as your contact list from any Safelist.  Something like Yournamesafelists@gmail.com.  You will be getting hundreds of emails coming through each day.  For reading them, you get credits that you use to pay for your adverting.  So, remember to read at least a few each day but not necessarily all the way through.  Just enough to get the credits.

Short time future to making those few extra dollars.

At this point that is where I am at.  Earning credits to place my adverts onto my two main Safelists and, there are hundreds.  So BEWARE of spending money and watch out for Shiny Objects.  If I can still be caught by them, what chance do you stand.  Don’t come telling me that you have spent hundreds of dollars on programs you can’t understand.  You have been warned 🙂

Make those important few extra dollars

Okay, so this is only the second day but I have really been working on this for two weeks or more and more heavily six years or so ago for about six months.   I thought that first I had better outline what I think Internet marketing is all about and, can it earn you the money you NEED, not just want. I am not worried about the people who want those few extra dollars but are not prepared to work for them.  I want the people who NEED them and are prepared to work for them.

Yes, you can make enormous amounts of money on the internet but only for a few, very dedicated people, who have the knowledge and the expertise to design things in the information areas that they persuade you to buy.  Many are scammers, but not all.  The trick is to sort them out before you spend any money.  You do this by asking people that you already have trust in and, also by carrying out a Google search on their business or title,  adding the word Reviews.

Unfortunately the scammers have learned about this, so have paid supposedly innocent bystanders to write in denying the claims of Fraud and Scam by the company and, by sheer volume, keep pushing down the list, the bad reviews until sometimes it is no longer on the first page.  And who goes beyond the first page?  I do !  So keep looking until you believe that you have got the truth.  Even then, be aware.

Yes, you can earn the sort of money I am talking about but it means giving some time to it.  You will be learning for quite a while and it will cost something.  Again, the trick is to keep those expenditures down as low as possible.  I have committed to earning enough money in the first six months to pay for all the money I know I will have expended within that time, say by Christmas 2016, and by being in profit during the next six months, say by the end of June 2017.  Stick with me and we’ll see where we go.  I do not expect you to be constantly putting your hand in your pockets at this stage, let me try it first.  I have contacts within 12 Second Commute that lists a number of heavily advertised companies that are to be avoided and, that is only the tip of the iceberg.

For a few extra dollars more

Internet Marketing is very basically selling something, goods, services, information etc on line, on the web. So I would advise you to get a blog.  Charlie Page, from The Directory of Ezines, kindly made a blog for me because I have just purchased one of his more expensive programs,  The blog has just been finished and you are now reading this, which was written on 28th June 2016.  His involvement should be kicking in within the week to increase the selling power of the blog and may involve me in spending more money with him, building a list of people who have expressed an interest in what I have to eventually sell.  That is called, The List.  The area in what I sell is called, The Niche.  Could be bananas, golf stuff, fishing gear or, “Making Money” like me.

I have two other web sites made by a mate in half an hour for a few dollars.  It’s a blog site you want, not a full blown website but, that is your choice.   This isn’t a treatise on the step by step stuff, it’s an outline and, if you have a question, I will answer it if I can and make a page of FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions).

The Niche can be anything from Apples to Zebras and literally anything in between.   Responsible sites do not like you selling Porn or Gambling, but it is still your choice.  I am unsure what my niches (more than one) are liable to be.  More work of course but it spreads the field.

There are some very definite things you will need to get you started. Number one is the list of people that you will eventually be introducing your items to but,  you have to have the knowledge and the tools to do that.  For that I would recommend 12 Second Commute.  Based upon the premise that it takes 12 seconds to walk from your bedroom to your computer.

I started, needing those few extra dollars, not knowing the basics.

I first joined 12 Second Commute in about 2010 and struggled with the entire concept but, I still made enough money to pay for all the fees that I had paid them in six months.  I really struggled and never could work out how an Auto Responder or a Rotator worked.  The rest of the site resembles a file of Allsorts but, the amount of information he has there is absolutely awesome with dozens of videos to help you.  Plus, Darryl has always been there with help.  At one time he tried an expensive program that was going to get us lists of guaranteed subscribers and we all willingly paid an amount to join it.  Well, Darryl paid for the program which failed miserably.  He had been scammed and lost all the money.  Darryl paid us, out of his own pocket, what we had paid him.  He felt responsible, and that meant a lot to me.

So when my wife got a lot better, and I decided to get involved once more into Internet Marketing, I went to 12 Second Commute and found that after six years of no contact, I was still a member and had access to all the programs.  Sorry, but you will have to start from scratch.  Have a look and any questions get back to me.  He even has a Blogging Centre where you can build your own blog with at least half a dozen videos to help you.  Plus he has a List Building Centre and a Capture Page maker.  All really necessary.

Next is Charlie Page from The Directory of Ezines.  He will be contacting me soon to finish up on the program I bought from him to empower the Blog I now have.  He is acknowledged as the Master of List building and Copy Writing.  I will also be getting advice from him on my choice of Niches and List Building.  I’ll tell you what happens as I go.

Basic Affiliate Marketing for those few extra dollars.

In the meantime, just to wet your appetite.  Have a look at www.tradetracker.com/ and www.commissionfactory.com/  They carry adverts than you can place, at no cost, into your blogs.  If someone clicks onto them and buys something, you will get a small commission and you haven’t paid a cent.  Unfortunately you don’t get the names or emails for your lists.  That is why you need an Auto Responder.  Tradetracker is basically a U.K. based operator, whereas Commissionfactory is Australian.  The choice is yours, at least have a look.  I don’t get anything from either of the two programs but, it’s a cheap way to start learning.  Let me know how you do and, start collecting email addresses now.  BTW any decent program will recommend a double opt in system so you are not spamming.  We are simply bringing the market in the street, into our homes.

Make those important few extra dollars #3

Make those important few extra dollars. #3

Well, I’ve been doing this for almost two months so far and got some things out of the way.

I have my Domain name that I will be using for this blog.  http://www.aussiesilverfox.com.

My Blog is being hosted by a friend who also put WordPress into it for me.

I have now contacted 12 Second Commute and re-established myself.  Only to find that they are now bigger and better than ever and in the process of releasing a completely reformed 12 Second release and would advise you to contact them NOW and get in ASAP and, at a very low price .  Always the best thing to do.  Either now while it is at it’s cheapest or, if you are too late for that, join now anyway.  You will never regret it.  Well, only if you don’t bother to learn and use all that it has to offer.   Stuff that no one else that I have met on the web has.

I have joined the two major programs

I have also joined The Directory of Ezines and was able to get a Solo advertisement inserted into one of the magazines.  16,000 readers who are only interested in making money.  I was told, by private email, that they were sorry and could not get my initial classified advert in until September 2016.  But my solo advert could appear on 27th July because they only carried three adverts in any edition.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Going back over my old stuff, I found that I had become an Affiliate of a few safelists years ago.  I have put up advertisements for 12 Second Commute and The Directory of Enzines.  It may be a while before I get results on these as they were free adverts.  Again, I’ll let you know but, for a few extra dollars spent on advertising, may make all the difference.

Am I making those important few extra dollars yet?

No, but I know that I am heading in the right direction.

I have a couple of free adverts in Safelists which I am, with difficulty, having to learn how to use again.  I know that I will but is very tiring for me as I am definitely not a computer geek.  That is why I am always concerned about the support behind any program I get involved in.  Must have support, and a good one at that before I join.  Go to the  Contact Us section and ask a basic question.  Then see how long they take to get back to you and was the answer helpful.  I learned many years ago that there is no such thing as a stupid question but I have seen some smart a**** speakers give sarcastic or stupid answers.  NEVER be afraid of asking a question.  I would like to bet that there are a number of people who are dying to ask the same thing but are too nervous and are so glad that you asked it instead.

So, at this stage it is a bit of a waiting game while I try and figure out which safelists are good and reliable.  I’ll get back to you in a few days and bring you up to date with the various results mentioned above.  In the meantime, keep on learning with 12 second commute because that is going to be your biggest helper as you progress.

I haven’t spent much money on advertising but know that I will have to soon.  I have to build a list if I expect people to buy from me.  My main advertising will concentrate on 12 Second Commute at the moment because anyone who buys becomes a list member and I get a VERY SMALL commission initially.  But having them as a list member is far more important.

Next step is to contact all my family members, friends and anyone else that I have ever had contact with.  This is to let them know what I am doing and giving them the opportunity to join me if they want.  They will never get another letter about this subject again, unless they want more information.  Hopefully some will join with me and be the start of my list.  After that I will have to start paying for adverts and using the Free Safe Lists.  If you think it distasteful contacting friends and relatives.  How would you feel, when you have become a little richer, and they are still in a hole and said to you, “Why did you never tell me about it.”?   Hopefully you could reply, I did.  But you weren’t interested at the time.  Would you like me to show you now? It’s not too late.”  I’ll let you know how that goes too.   Remember that we are simply bringing the old street market into our homes.

Make those important few extra dollars #1

Make those important few extra dollars #1
By Frank Church |

I can’t promise you anything at this stage. Many years ago, in 2010, after I retired and before my wife started treatment for cancer, I decided that I would try and make those important few extra dollars that are important in making that little difference in our lives. and possibly yours.

Paying the bills immediately when they come in. Having enough to actually go out to a decent, but not over the top, restaurant, sometimes. Buying the stuff to bring a family up and, although our kids are all adults now, we still remember the stress when it was time for new school uniforms, books and in particular the requests from the school for money to pay for an outing or a special trip, sometimes overseas. And not having the money to pay. You know how it felt ( and so did the kids) or you wouldn’t be reading this.

Making a few extra dollars CAN be easy.  You just need to follow the right plan.

Anyway, I started in the usual way and spent a lot of money on scammers who promised the earth and simply ripped me off.  I just needed to earn a few extra dollars.  You see, that although I can use a computer, I am not a nerd and was coming across words that these “Experts” were using that I had no idea what they meant. Then a friend I trusted introduced me to a system that did not promise me outstanding riches but, a steady income if I persisted.

Within a six month period I had made back all the money I had spent up to that time on all the other ripoff merchants. I had also come across another system that interested me and I toyed with it but never really got involved, just liked the way he was speaking.

Unfortunately, my wife became quite ill and I dropped everything to look after her. Now she has recovered and, although we know she will never truly fully recover, the cancer is on hold at the moment and I am starting again.

With both the first system, because they have all the tools that you MUST have to work as an Internet Marketer, and the second one because he had grown in size and respect in the time I was away and specialised in List Building and copy writing.

I have made a commitment to myself to get back any money I have to expend within six months and to be making a fair profit within a year. I also decided that I would help as many people as possible to do the same.

If this interests you and you want to either know more about what I am doing, then click on the links below. I will also be writing updates on this blog. That is why I have numbered this episode as number 1. You can also contact me privately through my contact page and I will try and answer any questions you have.

I sincerely hope that you have a great life in the future and, I also hope that I can be a part of it.

Regards Frank Church

The System or Sequence You Must Have to Succeed.

 System or Sequence.

If you don’t follow this System or Sequence you will probably be throwing both money and time away by the bucket load, and you may not make it anyway.  Not to mention the stress that comes when you are neck deep in information, and paperwork.  Paperwork from the programs that you have printed out.  Paperwork based on their promise of instant riches if you used their program. I sincerely hope that you are not already doing that.   It’s called “Information Overload” and can be fatal to your dreams.

The answer should be a resounding “NO, but what should I do.  Where do I get this system?”

In my blog at http://www.silverfoxtrading.com, I have explained that I am going to follow a system or systems from scratch, at my expense, so that I can see what works and then, you don’t need to buy the ones that don’t work.  Let me make the mistakes and follow my progress from my blogs.

There are so many con artists, spammers and thieves in the internet world, it’s sometimes hard to separate them from the truly honest, hardworking, reputable guys.

l Portrait of Frank

My name is Frank Church and I am 81 years of age.   Ex British Military, Ex London Police, mainly C.I.D.  37 years running my own security and investigation company with forty five on staff.  And, I have been a Justice of the Peace in South Australia since 1971 and now retired.  You want a cynic or a skeptic?   Here I am.

The first thing, that no one tells you, is the format, sequence or system, that you should follow in order to make the whole experience of being an Internet Marketer work.

Without this list you will quickly become overloaded with information.  Going for the newest “Shiny Object”.  The advert that lies to you and tells you that you can make $5,000.00 a month in two weeks and it is so easy.   Whoops, just saw a pig fly by.

Following this system is much easier than tearing your hair out in frustration.

It isn’t easy and it isn’t quick and, it will cost you some money to get it started.  I hope to get my personal costs back by Christmas 2017 and be in good profit by July next year.   I have done it before in 2012 but had to give it up when my wife became very ill.  She is much better now so I decided to start again and, have you follow me if you NEED those few extra dollars.     At that time I didn’t have a system and spent far more money and time than was warranted.  Are you prepared to listen, learn and work at it?   Initially you only need to follow me on this system but, without my expensive mistakes. I do not expect you to be paying out the sort of money I am, as I am doing this to help you, and others, avoid the many initial pitfalls.

This is a System, Sequence or Format to follow.  It is not a program.

Just a way to get started in Internet Marketing by doing certain things in a specific order.  Call it a plan if you like.   Please read the entire instructions before you start clicking on hyperlinks and losing the plot, again.  You WILL save a LOT of money if you stop reaching for those “Shiny Objects” and simply follow a system.

The first thing you will need is a Domain name.

Preferably a Domain name that  describes what you are trying to do or to promote a brand.  I have the nickname of, “The Silver Fox”, and have a blog  http://www.silverfoxtrading.com. and also http://www.aussiesilverfox.com.   I am promoting my brand.  There is also another one that I use to place banners on as an affiliate.  Anything connected with travel.  That one is http://www.holidayrentalsandtraveltips.com.

Domain names are cheap but think of several variations before you go to this site, NameCheap.  They should cost about $10.00 a year or so.   Using a .com address is the cheapest and easiest.  .com.au may be patriotic but unfortunately costs a lot more.  And, we are about getting you started at the least cost.  It costs nothing to look around NameCheap.   It is a reputable company, been in business a long time and gives great support.  You will always need support.    I said before, don’t click on any hyperlinks until you have read this entire document.

Blog or Website

Next. you need a blog or a web site to operate from.  A blog is preferred and I suggest that you contact http://www.wpbeginner.com.   They will build you one in WordPress for free.  Or you can get a friend to make one, and teach you how to use it but www.wpbeginners have stacks of free videos to help you out in your time of need.  There are many people offering to build you a Blog or Website, beware of the cost.

Hosting

Then you need  a HOSTING company to look after your blog.  NameCheap can do that for you too, quite cheaply.   There are many others but you need someone reputable that you can rely on. Some from about $10.00 a year.  Are you going to start, or continue, throwing your hard earned money away on those “Shiny Objects”?   Or take it step by step and succeed?  By following, the System.
Namecheap.com

All the tools you MUST have to even get off the ground.

The TOOLS you need to run your business are the next thing to get and the first major cost, about $100.00 or so.     A one off payment with the company I suggest but, they really do have everything you need and you don’t need to go all over the net.    Looking for things that you have never heard of and have no idea what they are, at the moment.  Things like Auto Responders, Rotators, Capture Pages, Lead Pages, Landing Pages, Squeeze Pages etc, etc, etc.  There is a mountain of information at            12 Second Commute and they have a tremendous amount of training videos for everything.

It’s free to try out and look around and I know that you will find that it is exceptional value.  Plus, the owner Darryl Graham is easily contactable, together with his support team.  Stay here for a while and learn the basics, like building your own Capture Pages and everything that goes with them.  Don’t try and rush it.  It will only cost you money you don’t have to spend.  Later on you may like to consider some programs that charge a fee every month, for the rest of your life.   Consider them carefully.  Here I am talking about the basics to get you going and earning money for the least outlay.  This is why I said, read all of this before you start hyperlinking.  Follow the system and stay on in 12 Second Commute until you have learned how to make your own Capture Pages and, use the Rotators, Auto Responders etc.  Lots of information there and you have to know it before you go any further.  Advertise and sell THEIR program.  It’s the start of making money.  It’s needed and a great start.  For you and those that join you.

The beauty of 12 Second Commute, (12 seconds from your bedroom to your computer) is that it has it’s own product for YOU to sell so, you can be be earning, and building a list while you are training.  You keep ALL the contacts.  Most affiliate companies do not let you have the names and emails of the people who bought their product through you.  No use to you when trying to build a list.   But, if you find a good one, you may just be tempted to try it to earn some money.  Making and selling your own products is way beyond this overview.  This is BASIC stuff but SO important.

Products and “The List”

When, and only when, you have all the items above.  You have learned enough about WordPress to find you way around it.  Have really studied and worked on your capture pages with 12 Second Commute.  You are ready to sell a product or service while building a “List” though 12 Second commute.  You can sell their product, or any others through their Capture Pages and Auto Responder, and all names that have expressed an interest in the type of thing you are selling, are yours.  You haven’t quite finished with the basics yet, but you are close.  Things to sell are out there or, you may have your own, and can build from there.  That is where the big money is.  We can cover that when you get there.

You must have heard about, “Having a List” by now.  It is true, you can’t build a business without a group of people interested in the products you have to sell.  To get the list you have to sell a product by use of a capture page or an email message and “Capture” the names and emails of those interested.  Concentrate on one product at the start.  Concentrate on one Niche, or Area at the start. Never spam anyone, ever, but, you can offer those that have indicated that they are interested in what you have to sell, another product.  You certainly have to tell all your family, friends and anybody else you know that has a computer, what you are about to become involved in.  This will give them the chance to join you or not

How embarrassing for you, when you start making money, to have a friend or relative say,”Why didn’t you tell me about that?”.

Advertising

The final basic thing is “Advertising” and I would advise that you look at, and join, “The Directory of eZines”, (electronic magazines).    Again, The Directory of Ezines has going for years.  It is respectable with Charlie Page and his support team always at the end of an email.   When you join you can become an affiliate here too and sell The Directory of Ezines and earn a nice commission.  Unfortunately, with this program you are not allowed to collect any names to build your list.   So you are probably better off promoting 12 Second Commute in the first place until you are more confident and have some names on your list to advertise to.

By now you will know the basics and are hopefully, earning some money.   It can only get better from here and you have had a good grounding in the basics of Internet Marketing and, I have probably covered less than 10% of the subject.  The amount you earn is up to you.  You are in your own business with an outlay less than a couple of hundred dollars.   Just think what any other business would cost you to become involved.   Even a delivery boy needs a good bicycle, and look at what price they are nowadays.  Follow my progress on my blog at http://www.aussiesilverfox.com and keep in touch.

Final words at this time, keep up to date with me at my blog, http://www.aussiesilverfox.com.  The words in blue in the body of this article are hyperlinks to various programs.  Some I will get a commission on, but only if you actually join the program.  Nothing for just looking around to see if it suits you or the blogs.  Some I won’t get any money for but, I thought you might like to see how it works.

Read the entire article first, then go back to the top and open the hyperlinks in sequence.  When you have what you want, or learned all you need to know in that section, go to the next one.  Would love to hear how you are doing and whether or not this has helped you.

You can contact me at any time and, if I can help you, I will.

How Old is Grandma

How old is Grandma?  Have you ever asked that?  (Read this to the end– quite an eye opener.)

Stay with this — the answer is at the end… It will blow you away.   Remember that I am now 81 and it applies in the U.K. and Australia too.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events.

The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandmother replied, “Well, let me think a minute,

I was born before:
‘ television
‘ penicillin
‘ polio shots
‘ frozen foods
‘ Xerox
‘ contact lenses
‘ Frisbees and
‘ the pill

There were no:
‘ credit cards
‘ laser beams or
‘ ball-point pens

Man had not yet invented:
‘ pantyhose
‘ air conditioners
‘ dishwashers
‘ clothes dryers
‘ and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon

Your Grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together.
Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, “Sir.”

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man  with a title or profession, “Sir.”

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.
Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.
Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with
Your cousins.

Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends — not purchasing condominiums.

We had never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD’s, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President’s speeches on our radios.

If you saw anything with ‘Made in Japan ‘ on it, it was junk.

The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 & 10-cent (5 and dime) stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

‘ “grass” was mowed,
‘ “coke” was a cold drink,
‘ “pot” was something your mother cooked in and
‘ “rock music” was your grandmother’s lullaby.
‘ “Aids” were helpers in the Principal’s office,
‘ “chip” meant a piece of wood,
‘ “hardware” was found in a hardware store and.
‘ “software” wasn’t even a word.

We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.

We volunteered to protect our precious country.

No wonder people call us “old and confused” and say there is a generation gap.

How old do you think I am?

Read on to see — pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

Are you ready?????

This woman would be only 63 years old.

She would have been born in late 1952.
GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

Beware Pickpockets. Be Aware but not Paranoid.

Pickpockets Travel Tips.

Having served with the Criminal Investigation Department in the Metropolitan Police in London and, doing my stint on a Q car.  I had a good background on traveling pickpockets, so feel qualified to add this tip to my blog.

Having also spent many years as a Security Consultant, giving advice to executives concerning their travel plans. The steps they should take to avoid trouble while traveling and in fact, any places where they felt a bit insecure.

The best advice I can give is, “Don’t be paranoid. Just be aware.” In other words, be aware of what is happening around you, take note of your surroundings and the people around you. Enjoy your life and your travels but keep your wits about you. Don’t be the “Easy Mark” that thieves are looking for.   If they can see that you are not going to be an “Easy Mark”, there is always someone who will.

Most Tourist Centres and Major cities attract Pickpockets

Most major cities throughout the world have their share of pickpockets. Some much better than others and, if they haven’t got their own home grown ones. There are plenty of good pickpockets only too willing to come to town for the easy pickings, and to escape the pressures of home.

Let’s get the easy stuff out of the way first. Pickpockets come in all shapes and sizes. All ages and sexes. All nationalities and colours. That usually means that you will be unable to know if the person standing next to you is sizing you up to see if you are a good “Mark”, and prospective donor to their retirement fund.

At this time we are talking only of pickpockets but, there can be other more clumsy ways, and usually violent ways, to get you to part with your purse, bag or wallet. I’ll deal with those in later articles.

Pickpockets work as a team, in most cases.

Pickpockets usually work as a team, in crowded places. But not always. I was once responsible, with other police officers, of arresting a hard working professional pickpocket team in London, at a busy bus stop. At the head of the queue was the Blocker. He, because of his size in this case, got onto the platform first.   Under the pretext of asking directions and by moving around, he blocked the entry of the remaining queue who were all pushing and shoving to get on the bus.  With help from the rest of the team. The Blocker can be an elderly, apparently confused old woman or old man. Usually with a large basket or case that impedes the movement of the crowd behind them. I am sure that you get the idea.

The Dip, the one who actually has the skill to remove the article they already have their eye on, is immediately behind the crush of people trying to get past the Blocker. They have already selected their Mark and, there could be two or three of these Marks on the bus and also several Dips.

Behind them, are The Passers. Once a Dip has removed an object, it is immediately handed on to one of The Passers who leaves the immediate area as soon as possible with the item. In fact it could, and with a really professional group, be passed on several times so, that no matter if someone is suspected or caught. There is never any evidence on them. It’s long gone.

Usually the item is taken somewhere close, maybe a car, and money, credit cards, house keys and anything else of value taken out.  Then the item, the wallet, purse or bag, dropped into a rubbish bin or thrown away where it won’t be found for a while.

Pickpockets are everywhere.

My wife and I travel a lot and have always done so. We are usually Travelers and not Tourists.  There is a difference.  I always have a Bum Bag, the Americans call them Fanny Packs.   It fits on my belt as a separate item and has either three zips horizontal across the front. One for the Passports, one for local money and one for other monies.   I have another with two zips across the front and another zipped pocket, for my major money, at the back.   My shirt is always worn outside my trousers and over my belt, effectively concealing the pack and even if they did get their hand there, which zipped pocket is the money in?  I also usually wear a travel jacket, like a fisherman’s or photographer’s jacket with a number of pockets. I can also slide the pack around my body so that it is in different places and with the numerous pockets on show. It can be confusing to a prospective pickpocket. I am no longer An Easy Mark.

Everyone is a target to a pickpocket.

Until you show the pickpockets sizing you up, that you are not an Easy Mark.

In The Ramplas, in Barcelona, Spain last year, my wife was wearing TWO jackets and other clothing as it was mid winter. She had a wallet in the inside pocket of the inside coat and they were both buttoned up. She still lost her wallet to a very good pickpocket and never knew it had been taken. She knew of my concerns but, in the excitement of the moment in the crowd, was momentarily unaware and it cost her.

I had two attempts to pick my pockets on the Barcelona underground. Crowded area again and, in another incident, a hand brushed across my backside where a man would usually keep a wallet. I am not that pretty that it could have been anything else. When he saw I had noticed, he apologised profusely and disappeared into the crowd. There may well have been other attempts that I was unaware of, but I did not lose anything.

In Spain you are always being warned against pickpockets. The Ramplas, in the central shopping district, is an ideal spot for them with all the naive and rubber necking tourists around.

Be EXTRA wary in circumstances like this anywhere in the world. Crowds and bustle. In Italy we were warned about the groups of gypsies in the markets. Particularly if one was carrying a baby. That baby could be thrust at you in such a way that you had to hang on to it. In the meantime there would be a crowd of noisy, vocal gypsies, male, female and children learning the trade, all round you. Pushing each other and you and, going through your pockets in the process.

There are many other ways to steal from you.

Pockets can not only be picked. They can be sliced open and the contents removed. Particularly back pockets on men’s trousers.

A lady on our cruise had her handbag over her shoulder in The Ramplas in Barcelona. Only to find when she got back to the ship that the entire bottom had been sliced right open. Only the fact that it was a good bag with a sturdy lining, prevented all the contents coming out.

As I have said, Don’t be paranoid. Just be aware. Don’t be the rubbernecking tourist who is an easy mark. Know what is happening around you and enjoy your traveling anywhere in the world.
